Född 1748, förmyndare åt sin brorson Gustav IV Adolf efter mordet på brodern Gustav III 1792. Han levde ett tillbakadraget liv efter att Gustav IV Adolf blivit myndig 1796, men blev utsedd till riksföreståndare 1809 av ledarna för statskuppen.
